  3. <hi style=afpcap>The Curtiss P-40 was primarily employed for combat operations, although some were flown in the training role. Amongst these was the 46 Fighter Squadron, which was part of the Central Instructors School based at Randolph Field, Texas, with one of their aircraft being illustrated. The primary role of the squadron was train prospective tutors for Army Air Force combat pilot schools. </hi>
